We at Root Hair Institute can help you achieve the look you desire for your facial hair including your beard, mustache, goatee, etc with our experienced staff and state-of-the-art facilities.
Some folks prefer to have beards or other forms of facial hair styles such as mustaches or goatees. However, some individuals are unable to grow a beard or have patchiness or thin areas. If you fall into one of these categories and would like to have a thicker or fuller beard, there’s no need to fret – there are treatment options available including beard restoration surgery.
Beard restoration surgery (also called beard transplant) is a type of hair transplantation that uses your own hair to create a fuller, thicker beard. Our experienced surgeons at Root Hair Institute will work with you to help you get the look you desire.
If you’re considering beard restoration surgery, contact us at Root Hair Institute today to schedule a consultation. We’ll be happy to answer any questions you have and help you make an informed decision about whether this procedure is right for you!
Patients desiring a fuller appearance or correction of thinner areas of their beards are often able to do so with beard restoration surgery. The approach to beard transplantation is very similar to scalp hair and eyebrow restoration. It is a minimally invasive outpatient procedure where our surgeons will harvest the patient’s own hair from the ‘donor area’, usually the back or sides of the scalp. We then transplant these hairs to the desired locations in the ‘recipient area’, which are the areas with thin or no hair in the beard, mustache, or goatee.
The process of beard restoration surgery at Root Hair Institute
The first step in the process is to schedule a consultation. It is important to have a consultation first to determine if there are any medical conditions or inflammatory types of hair loss that could be contributing to loss of hair in the beard area. If so, it would be recommended to treat these underlying conditions. If it is determined that you just genetically have sparse hair in these areas, then beard transplant surgery could be right for you. You will meet with your surgeon at Root Hair Instituteduring the consultation so that they can examine the area to make a diagnosis as above.
They will also examine your donor area with a dermatoscope (magnifying device) to check the quality of the hair follicles that will be harvested. The goal is to obtain the best follicles that will look natural in their new destination – the beard. The type of harvesting method that is recommended will be determined and discussed with you at this time (ie. FUE or FUT). Additionally, you will also discuss your ‘ideal’ beard look and goals with your doctor, so that they can help come up with a beard restoration plan for you. They will discuss the risks, benefits, alternatives, and recovery with you. You will get an estimate of cost based on the number of grafts needed in your case.
Our beard restoration surgery can help those bothered by thin or sparse beards in the following ways:
Inability to grow a beard can be problematic for some and lower their self confidence. With beard restoration, you will have a way to improve your facial hair and build associated confidence!

We always use methods to make the transplanted hair look as natural as possible. This includes choosing hair follicles from the donor that match the characteristics of the existing hair in the beard. Generally, these follicles reside naturally on the sides (temporal-parietal) and lower portion of the back (inferior occipital) of the scalp. The hair follicles can be harvested via either the follicular unit transplant (FUT) or follicular unit excision/extraction (FUE) method depending on the size of the area needing to be treated as well as the hairstyle you wish to wear long term. For example, individuals desiring shorter hair on the sides may opt for FUE vs those who wear their hair longer on the sides and back may prefer the FUT procedure. Some information on the basics of both of these methods of donor harvesting are included below. The pros and cons of both FUT and FUE methods of donor harvesting will be discussed with you at your beard restoration surgery consultation.
This procedure involves removing a strip of hair follicles from the back and sides of the scalp, which is then divided into individual follicular units. These individual units are then transplanted into the areas of the beard with little to no hair or where a fuller appearance is desired.
This procedure involves individually extracting follicular units from the back and sides of the scalp one by one with a small circular punch and then transplanting them into the areas of the beard with little to no hair or where a fuller appearance is desired.

A beard restoration surgery, also known as a beard transplant or beard transplantation, is a minimally invasive outpatient procedure to restore hair to the beard area. The procedure is similar in concept to a hair transplant for the scalp or eyebrow(s).
Overall this is a well-tolerated procedure with a relatively quick recovery period. As with any surgery, there are some risks associated with beard transplants, such as bleeding, infection, redness, inflamed hair follicles or cysts, scarring, numbness, pain, poor growth, poor healing, and more. In most cases the transplants are successful with minimal associated complications. However, it is important to discuss all the risks, benefits, alternatives, and recovery period with your surgeon during your consultation so that you fully understand the procedure before deciding to move forward with it.
Generally those with naturally or genetically thinner or sparse beards who want a fuller or thicker beard are good candidates for beard transplant. Those who have lost beard hair due to internal medical conditions or inflammatory hair loss generally are not good candidates for beard restoration surgery as the underlying problem needs to be addressed. If you are considering a beard transplant and want to find out if you are an appropriate candidate, it is important to have a consultation with a hair restoration surgeon, such as our surgeons at RHI, to obtain a diagnosis and appropriate treatment plan to help you achieve your goals.
