Eyebrow restoration surgery is a popular treatment to help “thicken” eyebrows or to entirely reconstruct them depending on the presenting eyebrow features at the time of consultation. The primary goal of eyebrow restoration surgery is to add more fullness in patients that have sparse hair follicles in one or both eyebrows. This can have a large impact in the overall appearance of the face as the eyebrows serve to frame the eyes.

The procedure itself is similar to scalp hair restoration in that the hair follicles (grafts) are obtained via either FUT or FUE procedure (see Hair Restoration Surgery). It is important for the physician and surgery team to be aware of the ideal hair characteristics of grafts for eyebrows so that these can be targeted for harvesting and then subsequently transplanted into the recipient eyebrow region(s). Generally, the appropriate hair follicles for harvesting are found to be on the sides of the head (temporo-parietal regions) or the lower part of the back of the head (lower occipital region). These hairs are naturally thinner and appear more natural when transplanted in the eyebrow region.

During your eyebrow restoration consultation at Root Hair Institute, it is important to discuss with the surgeon your goals as far as your eyebrows are concerned and your desired look. Your surgeon will educate you on the options to obtain the needed follicular grafts and map out the recipient area. During the procedure, your hair restoration surgeon will determine the direction, angle, and depth of each of the transplanted hair follicles to optimize your results. The transplanted hair shafts of each transplanted graft are left slightly longer than with scalp hair transplants so as to determine the curl of the hair follicles once they are transplanted into the eyebrow region. This technique is more difficult and time-intensive but important in order to improve the appearance of the final results.

The team will also educate you on post-operative care in the days and weeks after the surgery. As with any type of hair restoration surgery whether on the scalp, beard, or eyebrow, the hair follicles will grow new hair shafts that generally become visible at 4-6 months but will continue to fill in up to 12-15 months post-surgery.

Eyebrow restoration surgery is a permanent option that allows the growth of hair and unlike microblading there is no fading or changes in color over time. If patients have existing microblading, eyebrow restoration surgery can be a great compliment to the microblading to provide actual hair growth of the eyebrows in addition to the existing pigment.
